Also known as the cultural capital of Europe, Vienna is truly a cosmopolitan city and striving to be a great eco friendly city. This is one place in Austria where you’ll find people of different nationalities and culture. As such, the city is enchanting and is beautiful. Its sheer beauty is what attracts thousands of visitors to it. To complement the natural beauty of this place, there are many monuments and other buildings that have significance owing to their architecture. One of the great ways to see Vienna is by car, but make sure it is eco friendly when you hire it!

The Austrian capital is large in size and getting around it is no easy task. You’ll definitely feel the need to have the services of car hire Vienna at some point in time. There are different public transport options for you in the city. However, they are not ideal for covering all places that you wish to visit while you’re in the city. Taxis too are available in the city. But they’re really expensive and might tease your budget. Contrary to these options, a car rental company provides you arguably the best travel option for you. In addition to being comfortable, they’re worth your money and have all the basic facilities that you have expected out of a rented company.

The best part in hiring these companies for your travel purpose is that you can roam around the town at your own pace and you’ll be an independent traveler. The river Danube passes through Vienna and the cascading waters of it provide an excellent destination for you to visit at least once. But this is not all the town has got to its credit. Vienna enjoys a moderate climate for most part of the year and hence is an ideal place for romantic couples to spend their time. There are also many places in the city that reflects the rich heritage of the region. All these places and more can be visited and explored only when you have a car at your disposal.

Music lovers will surely love Vienna for different reasons. After all, this has been the birth place of several top musicians over the years. Some of these top music contributors include Beethoven, Schubert and Mozart. All rich treasures belonging to these artists and music in general are well preserved in galleries across Vienna. A trip to these places in your rented car will surely be one of those moments that you’ll cherish for the rest of your life. Make sure you get a car for your travel purpose well in advance as this will ensure you’ll not have to struggle at the end to get one.

Every year, millions of UK residents make their way to the Emerald Isle for a vacation. While some opt for a city break to discover the delights of Dublin or Cork, others will enjoy a full-blown holiday in one of Ireland’s seaside resorts. We all have different tastes, of course, but virtually everyone who crosses the Irish Sea comes back with a very positive image of the country and a host of special memories.

The Republic of Ireland’s national colour is green, of course, but many British tourists aren’t green enough when travelling there. Using the family car is all very well, of course, but there are several ways to get to the country without having to travel hundreds of miles in a gas-guzzling vehicle, especially when doing so is unnecessary.

Travel around and see the country

here are several car rental companies in Ireland which offer the latest models at exceptionally reasonable rates, which is why more UK tourists should consider leaving their own cars at home and travelling across the sea by ferry instead. As well as helping the environment, it can also make the journey a lot more enjoyable.

The sea crossing between the countries is a relatively short one, so it doesn’t have to cost the earth. The greener-thinking tourist will usually make their way to one of the ports via bus or train, and this option is not only easy and convenient, it can also help to make the whole holiday a more relaxing one.

There are ferries from various UK locations, so it’s always easy to find a convenient crossing, whether you live in the south of England or the north of Scotland. Liverpool, Holyhead, Stranraer, Troon, Fishguard and Swansea offer fast, regular trips to the north and south of the island, so there really is a destination to suit everyone.

And once in the Emerald Isle, if the tourist wishes to hire a vehicle he or she can do so with ease. There are plenty of companies to choose from, ranging from local independent enterprises to major international corporations. Prices are low, and almost any imaginable car is likely to be available.

Excellent public transport network

By using a mass transportation system to get to Ireland itself, via ferries, buses and trains, visitors will have helped to make their vacation significantly greener, and will also have helped to maintain the planet’s resources in the process. It makes sense on so many levels to leave the family car at home when visiting Ireland from the UK.

Many tourists will get to the beautiful Emerald Isle and decide not to hire a car at all. The public transport network is excellent, so the vacation could be even greener. However, some places aren’t particularly easy to get to, so it’s perfectly understandable if the individual chooses to rent a vehicle for all or part of the trip.

For more information about the comprehensive choice of hire car options in Ireland, all that’s needed is a quick visit to the Internet. With so many companies offering the latest vehicles but at wildly differing prices, the sensible option is to take a look online and see where the best deals are.

David Rice, a UK resident with a particular love for all things Irish, is a regular visitor to the Emerald Isle. Thanks to cheap car hire Irelandis easy to explore, and in the next few months David plans to see just how affordable it can be. When it comes to car hire Ireland ha splenty to offer the visiting tourist.

People are becoming more environmentally aware every year. Upgrading and retrofitting old systems to use less energy and create less waste is a trend that is not only catching on with private home owners, but with big businesses as well. Better sustainability often saves money too, making it the best choice for those who are looking to both help the environment and cut costs. Waterless urinal systems are one option that businesses are choosing to get these benefits.

Different Types of Systems
Waterless urinals have three main designs that are in popular use: microbiological systems, barrier systems, and valve systems. Some fixtures implement more than one of these systems to improve their effectiveness and alleviate some of the problems that go along with having a single system. Understanding how each of these systems work can help someone interested in the technology figure out which option is the best for them.

Microbiological Systems
Microbiological systems are one of the best ways to convert standard flush urinals into waterless. They work by using microbial spores to treat the urine by feeding on it and breaking it down. The result is a compound that is less likely to form into sludge that will coat and clog pipes. These microbes also work to thwart the growth of bacteria that cause urinals to stink. The main problem with microbial systems is that they do not work against other debris, such as hair, that may go down the urinal drain and get caught in the pipes; therefore it is required to flush the pipes out about once a week in order to prevent build-up.

Barrier Systems
These work by using a cartridge that collects the debris coming into the urinal so that it does not get stuck in the pipes. An oil-based fluid forms a seal which prevents odors from coming back out once they have passed into the system. These work well in combination with microbial systems, eliminating the need to flush pipes free of debris. Cartridges for barrier systems need to be replaced about every two to five months, depending on the level of usage.

Valve Systems
Valve systems seal the drain, allowing urine to pass into the pipes, but preventing odors from coming back out. Valves are an easy option for those looking to retrofit their existing urinals to waterless design. The main issue with valve systems is that the valves may sometimes get stuck in the open position, preventing them from working properly. Therefore, regular maintenance is necessary to keep them functioning.

Practical Benefits of Waterless Urinals
There are many practical benefits of using a waterless urinal system. The amount of water that can be saved ranges anywhere from 15 to 45 thousand gallons, per urinal, per year. They are also very good in locations where water may be scarce. They have fewer odors than standard urinals and generally require less cleaning. Regular urinals also tend to clog much more often than waterless systems, due to the minerals present in most water. With less water use, utility expenses are also less, saving money.

Environmental Benefits of Waterless Urinals
One of the main reasons for using waterless systems is the improved sustainability of them. Places that have very high volume, such as schools or business offices, can save millions of gallons of water yearly. This means less wasted water as well as less dirty water which must be processed in sewage plants. Strains on natural resources are reduced as are the associated costs and energy use that go along with acquiring and preparing those resources.

Using waterless urinal systems is both practical and helpful to the environment. There are few reasons to not use them, once one understands the details and knows the proper way to care for and maintain them. Flushing urinals are slowly becoming a thing of the past, which is good for everyone in the long run.

We need to save our fresh water, not flush it down the drain. Waterless urinals are fantastic because they spread less germs and create less odours than flushing. Contact Envirocare hygiene services WA for more information, to inquire, to download a brochure or request a quote.

In the last decade, architects have begun to tone down some of their projects, replacing flamboyance with practicality, and “bling” with sustainable materials, motivated by environmental concern. However, that doesn’t mean that all eco-friendly buildings are cursed with being either eyesores or drab “prefab” style wooden buildings. There are some amazing environmentally friendly buildings cropping up all over the world, from America to Istanbul.

One such example is the Aqua skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois. This gorgeous building features curved terraces that vary slightly from floor to floor, creating the illusion that the building is billowing in the wind. The tower isn’t just beautiful to look at, however, it features efficient double glazing, automatic sliding doors, and other innovations.

In Istanbul, “green design” isn’t quite the buzz-word that it is in Europe or the United States, but there are still some interesting developments appearing. For example, Hasan Calislar, the Architect behind Turckell’s R&D building, produced an interesting environmentally friendly building almost by accident.

He was faced with the challenge of producing a large building on a site with steeply sloped terrain. He decided to work with the slope of the site, and maximized natural light by using an open architectural style. This produced a large rooftop area, which he turned into a green space. Between the use of light, insulation, and the green spaces, he has created something that is energy efficient, attractive, and pleasant for those that work there. The technological choices, such as the automatic door openers, and the heating system, are almost incidental compared to the overall design of the building.

Sweden is another place that has some amazing eco-friendly buildings. For many years, the Swedish have taken advantage of Geothermal heating to reduce heating costs in modern buildings. This isn’t exactly a recent development – Geothermal heating has been in use for centuries, but modern architects are finding ever more inventive and efficient ways to take advantage of what nature has to offer.

Not all companies are so lucky, however. In countries with a lot of historic architecture, such as the UK, there are many established companies and organizations that face challenges bringing their headquarters up to modern standards. Some of the worst buildings in the UK, in terms of carbon emissions, are buildings owned by institutions such as the Bank of England.

Historic buildings such as the Palace of Westminster, or the Imperial War Museum aren’t exactly easy to upgrade, but there are some things that can be done to historic buildings with period features. Even traditional, heavy wooden doors can have automatic door openers fitted, although they won’t be quite as smooth as modern automatic sliding doors. Period windows can’t be replaced with double glazing, but interior panes can often be added to reduce the heat loss slightly.

Traditional buildings are a part of our heritage, and while they aren’t as fancy as Sweden’s Turning Torso or Chicago’s Aqua skyscraper, they are an important part of the UK’s landscape. Patching them up will be a challenge, but it’s one that we should rise to if we want to retain our reputation as world leaders when it comes to energy efficient and eco-friendly design.

This article was written by James Harper on behalf of Automatic Access, who offer automatic sliding doors and automatic door openers.

James has always been interested in architecture and loves keeping up with the latest developments and achievements.

It seems that, every year, residential energy bills climb even higher. Even though gas, oil and electricity are increasing in price, you shouldn’t have to pay astronomical amounts to keep your household humming along. Here are six energy saving tips, which, if used simultaneously, could reflect huge residential energy savings in your future bills.

1. Use cold water disposal.

If you have a garbage disposal in your sink, you may turn on the water to wash debris down the drain. Consider using cold water rather than hot to wash the last scraps of food into the disposal. Cold water uses less energy than warm, and it also has the added benefit of solidifying greasy residues, making them easier to remove.

2. Think Lilliputian in the kitchen.

If you don’t need large-sized appliances, don’t buy them. Simply purchasing the smallest refrigerator to accommodate your needs can save a bundle on electricity. The larger the model, the more energy it uses.

3. Be mindful of freezer/fridge temperatures.

The ideal temperature for a refrigerator is between 36-42 degrees. A freezer should be between -5 and 6 degrees. By using a small thermometer inside the units, you can make sure that they aren’t set colder than that. It takes more energy to make your refrigeration colder.

4. Maintain airtight seals.

If you notice that your fridge or freezer isn’t sealing as tightly as it used to when you close it, get it replaced/fixed. When seals aren’t tight, your refrigerator works harder than necessary to make up for lost cold.

5. Fill it up before you start it up.

When it comes to your dishwasher (or washing machine, for that matter) make sure that you have a full load before you start the cleaning cycle. Although it may be tempting to wash items as soon as they are soiled, it takes the same amount of water and energy to wash a partial load as it does to wash a full one. The less you wash, the more you save.

6. Get cookin’ without your stove.

One thing that can save a lot of energy is simply refraining from firing up the oven or stovetop. In the summer, this is a no-brainer when you can grill and sauté on your barbecue. However, you can save energy in the grill’s off seasons, too. Simply use a slow cooker, toaster oven, microwave or other small appliance to create your meals. Small appliances use less energy than stoves and ovens.

When you’re in the market for a vehicle, there are plenty of options that you can explore. Depending on your personal needs and preferences, you may find yourself tempted to set into the world of fuel efficient vehicles. If you’ve never owned an alternately powered vehicle before, you may find that you have a lot of unanswered questions about what this change might mean for you. This list will help you decide whether or not an alternately powered vehicle is right for you.

Price

While the price of a fuel efficient car will be more than a traditional internal combustion, gasoline powered car will be, the price saved on fuel is where this cost balances out.

Impact

A fuel efficient vehicle is specifically designed to lower your impact on the environment. Reducing your carbon footprint is easy when you switch your vehicle to an eco-friendly electric or hybrid vehicle.

Increased Sustainability

The less oil that you use as a family, the more sustainable you become as a household. It’s up to each of us to make individual changes in our life, both large and small, to ensure the future of our planet is a positive one. Purchasing an alternatively powered vehicle is a great way to reduce your use of non-renewable resources.

Wear Your Commitment on Your Sleeve

When you drive an alternately powered vehicle, you’re making a bold statement to other drivers that you care about the impact you’re having on the environment. Because eco-friendly vehicles are becoming more and more affordable, they’re becoming more common. Owning a hybrid is one way for you to show your commitment to making a positive change

Encourage Alternative Fuel Research

As a consumer, your purchase represents your vote. When you purchase a fuel efficient vehicle, you’re representing yourself on the market as someone who is interested in eco-consciousness. In turn, this interest translates into a demand, and car companies will rise to the demands of the market. By purchasing eco-consciously, you’re essentially voting for companies to pursue more information about eco-conscious transportation, and that truly is impactful.

When you’ve decided that an alternately powered, eco friendly vehicle is something that you want to purchase, be sure to do ample research on available insurance coverage. An eco-friendly car is an investment that needs to be protected from theft and damage, and it only makes sense to be sure you’ve found the best coverage for your individual vehicle and situation.

This guest post is from Allison with CarInsuranceQuotes.net, where you can find inexpensive car insurance rates for you new green vehicle.

Are you keen to reduce your carbon footprint? By using a wood burning stove to heat your home or place of work, you can dramatically reduce your impact on the global environment!

Choosing a Wood Burning Stove

There are numerous wood burning stoves available on the market; there are several points to consider when choosing the best one for your needs.

Heat Output

Each room is different in dimensions and volume, and this means that heat requirements for each room also differ. When purchasing your wood burning stove, make sure with your supplier that the stove can meet the requirements of your specific application. Take notes of room dimensions and thresholds (is it open plan, or does it have closable doors?).

Style

There are many styles of wood burning stoves, from contemporary to traditional. You can even purchase antique stoves from reclamation yards and specialist stores. Most traditional stoves are available in black, although some contemporary styles are available in numerous loud and proud colours.

Budget

There can be a large variance in the cost of wood burning stoves. Decide early upon your maximum budget. Contemporary designer stoves will generally be the most expensive. At the other end of the spectrum, you may find a bargain at a scrapyard or reclamation yard. You’ll also be “recycling” a previously used stove, reducing your impact on the environment from the manufacturing process involved with a creating new stove.

Alternative Stove Fuel – Straw Logs

If you own a wood burning or multifuel stove, you may want to check out a new type of green fuel called the ‘straw log’. Created from straw that is usually left to decompose in fields, they are an efficient and effective way of recycling agricultural by-product.

Recycling aside, straw logs have an extremely short plantation to fuel route, which is usually a maximum of one year. This means that within a year of the straw being planted, it will be in its fuel-state ready to be used for energy. When compared to wood and coal, which takes around 150 years, the benefits of straw logs are clear.

The levels of carbon dioxide released when the straw is burnt as a fuel, is no more than the carbon dioxide released when it is left to decompose. They can also be used in conjunction with many other types of stove fuel, meaning they are versatile and user friendly.

Polythene UK are a British company that care about their environmental impact. From compostable bags to pallet wrappers, Polythene UK can supply everything needed for the environmentally conscious manufacturer or supplier.

Green living is becoming a way of life for more and more people around the world. Despite varying views on global warming and climate change, people nonetheless feel an urge to conserve natural resources, protect the environment, and stop wasting simply because it’s possible. To that end, there are things all of us can do in our everyday lives to live more green. Believe it or not, this even applies to our computers.

Personal computers have become a necessary part of life just about everywhere in the Western world. We use them at work, at home, and on the go. The only problem is they do have an impact on the environment in more ways than one. By utilizing some practical, common sense principles, we can reduce our environmental footprint in terms of our computer use.

Switch to a Laptop

Did you know that a laptop computer uses significantly less energy than a desktop? It’s true. Some experts suggest it could be as much as 75% less depending on the make and model. Laptops use less energy because there is no separate monitor display, their components are more efficient, and they are easier to keep cool. As an added bonus you’ll find it very beneficial to be able to take your computer with you anywhere.

Utilize Power Saving Features

Laptop computers are built with certain power saving features that can be activated by your operating system. These power saving features include the screen saver, hibernation and sleep modes, and low-power display modes. By properly setting up your laptop to conserve power in certain situations, not only are you increasing the life of your battery, but you’re also consuming less power overall. And the less power we use, the less pollution we produce.

Learn How to Use the “Off” Switch

Somehow a myth began years ago that turning your computer off when not in use, then turning it back on it, is bad for it. That’s not true. Think of it like a car. If you constantly left your car running you would not only wastes gas, but you’d also reduce the life of your engine because it would be continually producing heat. And even with the car’s cooling system, heat is still the enemy. Your computer’s CPU works the same way. Leaving your computer running at all times produces heat, which uses electricity and reduces the life of your computer. Shut it off when you’re not using it.

Recycle Rather Than Discard

Lastly, when it’s time to replace your computer with a new one don’t simply throw the old one in the trash. Not only do computer components take a long time to break down a landfill, they also contain a myriad of hazardous chemicals that can be leaked in to groundwater and cause issues.

Computers aren’t a bad thing; we just need to use them a bit more responsibly. If we do, we can reduce the negative impact they have on our world.

If you’re the parent of young children you’ve probably received more than your share of advice from older parents about raising your children. And that’s good. They have the experience that you lack and they can be a great source of insight and information. But how many of older parents understand the desire of today’s young people to live in a more environmentally friendly way? Probably fewer than we’d like to believe. Yet many of today’s young parents feel that providing a green home for their babies is just as important as providing proper discipline and education.

A green home is a baby friendly home for a couple of reasons. First of all, when the child grows up in an eco-friendly environment he/she also learns to respect the environment and is less likely to abuse it as an adult. Secondly, many of the principles that make a home green result in household cleaners and other items that do not contain toxic chemicals harmful to children. In a sense, creating a green home is protection for your child both now and in the future.

Cleaning Materials

One of the first things young parents are taught is how to childproof their home. This includes keeping dangerous cleaning solutions out of the reach of little hands. We do so by putting them in a location the children can’t reach or by locking cupboards they can. While all of this is good, why not get rid of the dangerous chemicals altogether and go green? Not that green household cleaners should be left out in the open for Junior to consume, but if an accident does happen he/she will be poisoned to death.

Using green cleaning materials is also better for the environment because no toxic chemicals are involved in the production. Those same toxic chemicals don’t wind up in the sewers and groundwater either. It’s a more sensible way to look at cleaning solutions so as to provide the best products without harming the environment or our children. Thankfully, as these ideas have caught on, more and more manufacturers are going green on their product list.

Baby Care Items

Another thing young parents are doing with more frequency is going green where nappies and wipes are concerned. For baby’s nappy needs, the bravest of young parents are opting for cotton nappies they either wash themselves or hire a service to wash for them. Using cotton nappies keeps chemical nappies away from your baby’s skin and out of landfills. For parents who just can’t stomach cotton there is disposable green nappies that use recycled materials and contain no harmful chemicals.

There are certainly plenty of other ways to make a green home that is baby friendly. We’ve given you just couple here to whet your appetite and hopefully cause you to think. Let’s face it; we all want what’s best for our children throughout their lifetimes. If we can make their lives better by creating a green home, why wouldn’t we?
